Dashcam Battery Pack

What is a Dashcam Battery?

A dash cam records while you drive on power from the ignition. Parking mode is different: with the engine off, the camera has to draw from a battery. There are only two candidates — the one that starts your car (your vehicle battery), or one dedicated to the camera (a dashcam battery)

Your vehicle's battery. Lowest cost option to use, but beware, it will eventually be drained by the dash camera.

A dedicated dash cam battery. Best option to go with, as it will ensure your vehicle battery never gets drained (the one that starts your vehicle ).

Dashcam Battery Calculator

Parking mode has to draw power from somewhere: your vehicle's battery, or one dedicated to the camera. Answer four questions and we'll tell you which your setup actually needs, and roughly how many hours you'll get.

How many cameras does your setup record from?
What resolution does it record at?
How long does your vehicle usually sit unattended?
How much do you drive on a typical day?

Answer all four to see your result.

Estimates based on manufacturer single-channel figures adjusted for your setup. Real-world runtime varies with temperature, camera model and recording settings. Cold weather reduces capacity for both battery packs and vehicle batteries.

FAQ - Common Questions

How long will it actually last with my camera?

That depends on how many cameras you run and at what resolution. A front-and-rear setup draws roughly twice what a single camera does, so it gets roughly half the hours. Our calculator on this page asks four questions and gives you a real answer for your setup — including when you don't need a battery at all.

Will parking mode drain my car battery?

Not to the point of stranding you, although it could.... (depending on the vehicle battery age and condition). Every hardwire kit has a low-voltage cutoff that shuts the camera down while there's plenty left to start the engine. The subtler issue is wear rather than a dead battery: your starter battery gets cycled a little every night, which it was never designed for.

Will a dash cam battery drain my car battery?

No. It charges from the vehicle while you're driving and runs the camera independently while you're parked. Your starting battery is never involved in parking mode.

Why are your runtime figures different from the manufacturer's?

Because we rate every battery on the same basis, and they don't. Each brand picks its own power draw for its headline number, which makes their figures impossible to compare. We use 1.7W for a single camera and 3.2W for front-and-rear across everything we sell. Sometimes that makes a number higher than the box claims, sometimes lower — our own LDS P7D is listed at 45 hours where Energywell (the manufacturer) says 49, because 45 is what it does on our basis.

Does cold weather change the answer?

Yes, in both directions. A cold starter battery holds less usable charge and hits the cutoff sooner, so vehicle-powered parking mode gives noticeably fewer hours in January. Lithium packs aren't immune either — they charge only above freezing and give shorter runtime in deep cold. They keep their advantage, but they're not magic, and mounting location makes a real difference.

How long does it take to recharge?

It refills while you drive. Depending on capacity and how it's wired, most packs need somewhere between 50 minutes and two and a half hours of driving for a full charge. This matters more than most buyers realise: if your commute is short, a bigger pack may never reach full, and a pack that never fills is worse than a smaller one that does.

Where does the battery get installed?

Under a seat, in a trunk cubby, or behind a trim panel — somewhere out of sight, secured so it can't move. Size is the deciding factor and it's why we favour the compact LDS packs; they fit vehicles the larger ones don't. When we install, we pick the location around your vehicle's layout and its temperature behaviour.

Can I install it myself?

Plenty of customers do. You'll be connecting the pack between your hardwire kit and the camera, then routing and securing it. Budget a couple of hours and be comfortable with basic 12V work. Every pack ships with instructions and our support team can help by phone.

Do I still need a hardwire kit?

Yes. The hardwire kit is what draws power from your vehicle to charge the battery while you drive. Most cameras include one; if yours didn't, we'll add it.

Will it work with my dash cam?

Almost certainly. These packs output standard 12V to the camera, so brand doesn't matter. The exceptions are brand-matched features rather than compatibility — the Viofo, Thinkware and BlackVue packs pair with their own apps.

What warranty do I get?

One year on the battery itself. If we install it, our workmanship is covered by our lifetime installation warranty.
