This is the Japanese-made capsaicin rodent tape that Honda sells through its dealers as part 4019-2317. Same tape, 20 metre (65.6 foot) roll. Our part number is LY-40192317.
Honda doesn't make it. It's made in Japan by the company that supplies Honda, and it isn't sold as a Honda part. It works on any vehicle, not just Hondas.
Rodents chew wiring, and the repair bills are substantial. The faults are often intermittent and miserable to trace. Some newer vehicles use soy-based wiring insulation, which many technicians believe makes the problem worse.
The tape has capsaicin encapsulated in the backing, the compound that makes chilli peppers hot. A rodent that bites a wrapped loom gets a mouthful of heat instead of a meal. Unlike sprays, it doesn't wash off or need reapplying every few months.
Where to use it
Wiring harnesses, EVAP hoses, fuel lines and any exposed cable run. It applies like ordinary electrical tape and conforms to shapes. It also suits anything that sits parked for months: RVs, boats, trailers, lawn tractors and generators.
It protects what it covers and nothing else. It won't stop mice nesting in the air filter box or cabin air intake, so check those too if rodents have been in the vehicle.
Keep it away from direct exhaust heat.
How to apply
- Clean the surface of oil, dirt and loose insulation
- Wrap with 50% overlap, stretching slightly for a snug fit
- Finish with a secure tail and press the edges down
- Check occasionally and re-wrap if it frays
Wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards. Capsaicin is an irritant, and you will regret rubbing your eyes.
