How we ranked them

Ranked by sales, not by sponsors

Most "best dash cam" lists are written by sites that earn a commission on whatever they recommend. Ours is simpler: these are the three cameras our customers bought most in the last 90 days, and we install every one of them in our Markham shop. When buying habits change, so does this list.

What makes a dash camera worth buying

The four things that separate useful footage from a recording you can't use.

Footage

Resolution and sensor

4K with a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor reads plates that 1080p can't, especially at night.

Coverage

A rear camera

Rear-end collisions and parking lot damage happen behind you. Front and rear is what most of our customers choose.

Protection

Parking mode

A hardwire kit keeps the camera watching while you're parked, and stops before your battery runs low.

Canada

Built for our climate

All three use a supercapacitor instead of a lithium battery, so they survive a July dashboard and a January morning.

Best dash cam questions

What is the best dash cam in Canada?

It depends on what you need, and these three cover almost everyone. The Thinkware Q200DCH32 is our best seller and the easiest to live with. The Viofo A229 Pro 2CH gives the best footage for the money. The Thinkware U3000 PRO is the one for watching the car while it's parked, with radar parking mode and cloud. Not sure? Take the 10-second quiz.

How did you choose these three?

By sales. These are the three dash cameras our customers bought most from us in the last 90 days, out of the more than 40 we carry. We don't take payment for placement, and we install every camera on this page ourselves.

Is 4K worth it over 2K or 1080p?

For reading plates, yes. 1080p reliably shows you what happened; 4K is what lets you read the plate of a car that didn't stop, especially at night or at a distance. If your goal is evidence for a claim where both drivers exchange details, a 2K camera like the Q200 is enough.

Do I need a front and rear dash cam?

Most of our customers choose one, and it's the safer purchase. Being hit from behind is one of the most common collisions, and parking lot damage usually happens at the back too. All three cameras on this page record front and rear.

Will a dash cam drain my car battery?

Not when it's hardwired properly. A hardwire kit has a low-voltage cutoff that shuts the camera down while there's still plenty of charge to start the car. If you want parking mode for days at a time, a dash cam battery pack keeps your starting battery out of it entirely.

How much does dash cam installation cost?

Front and rear installation at our Markham shop is shown on every card as the installed price, including the hardwire kit where one is needed. Most installs take one to two hours and are done the same day. Bought a camera elsewhere? We install those too.

Do you ship across Canada?

Yes. Shipping is free across Canada on every camera on this page.

Still between two?

Tell us your vehicle and what you want to capture. We'll recommend one camera and give you the installed price.
